Welcome to The Student’s Letterboxd Wrapped! We asked our writers to share their favourite moments from the past year in film and television—whether it was a personal anecdote about a trip to the cinema, a memorable Oscar moment, a standout film release, or an actor they admired. Here’s what they had to say:
Adam Jeffrey:
I took a girl to see Mickey 17 earlier this year at the Cameo. We both thought it was pretty terrible, which gave us something to chat about over drinks.
Alanna Steel:
I saw the ten year anniversary re-screening of Interstellar and experiencing that in the cinema for the first time was breathtaking and extremely emotional… turn it up Hans Zimmer!
Juliette Pepin:
Going with some friends to see Wicked on opening night was simply magical. Not a single seat was empty and the audience glistened in pink and green. Watching with so many others as such a long-awaited adaptation unfolded on the big screen was so special!
Bambi Thammongkol:
Going to a screening of Cinema Paradiso at the Cameo with friends. We awkwardly shuffled through the completely packed theatre. Whispers, rustlings, and shifting seats. Often, a collective chuckle rippled through the audience, bouncing off beautiful Art Deco walls. A lovely reminder of the communal magic at the movies.
Julie O’Malley:
Witnessing an admirable desire to win and refreshing honesty is what pushed me to pick Timothée Chalamet’s SAG acceptance award speech as my favourite moment from this academic year. Why should ambition and devotion to become “one of the greats” be disapproved of in order to appear superficially humble?
Tamsin Dunlop:
This year I have enjoyed watching actor turned writer-director Jesse Eisenberg be weird and charming in interviews. In the press for his film A Real Pain, he appears in immense discomfort (real pain?) at even the thought of being interviewed, which makes for – you guessed it – great interviews.
Bree Morlin:
As a long time fan of musicals, watching Wicked in the cinema for the first time healed the trauma that Cats (2019) did to me.
Holly Kirkwood:
By far my favourite cinema experience of the year was seeing A Complete Unknown while all the phone alarms were going off for Storm Éowyn. Even iPhone did not want to hear lil Timmy T sing.
Sofia Özkan:
Seeing tributes to the life and work of the late David Lynch this year was incredibly touching and it is a testament to his unparalleled individuality as a filmmaker. Hopefully his originality and creative vision will continue to be celebrated and inspire others.
Daniel Ghazi:
Having the opportunity to organise a collaboration between the Film Society and Slurp: Students for Action on Homelessness was very special! Not only did we watch Tampopo, a deliciously absurd ode to food, while enjoying bowls of fried rice made by Slurp, but we also raised awareness about the amazing work they do around campus and donated £100 in support of their efforts!
Holly Chan:
I put on Dead Poets Society (a staple of my formative years) while attempting to write poetry. Long story short, no poems were written and I was reduced to a blubbering mess. Alas, what good is art if it doesn’t leave you a little undone?
Parthivee Mukherji:
Messi the dog becoming the biggest Oscar diva – not only did he steal the show in Anatomy of a Fall, but he also showed up to the Oscars, had a full red-carpet moment, and (allegedly) peed on the Academy floor. He was the real star for sure.
Liberty Gemmell:
Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy dropped on Galentine’s Day, so naturally my boyfriend and I were the only couple in a sea of women. He was one of three men in the entire cinema, and two of them were on screen!
Petrina Shek:
SNL 50th!! Absolutely star-studded SNL alumni and audience members, iconic recurring sketches (my personal favourite is “Bronx Beats”), crazy celebrity combinations (Sabrina Carpenter & Pedro Pascal in “Domingo”, Meryl Streep in “Close Encounters”), and a super enjoyable and wholesome show if you enjoy comedy!!
And finally a moment not quite Film & TV centred, yet all the same very relatable for all of our student readers out there…
Lucia Price:
My favourite moment was definitely pulling five day benders in clubs with my friends and losing my phone.
Thank you to all of our writers for a brilliant year in Film and TV! Here’s to many more to come x
