No, you’re joking! It just can’t be? The final Editors’ Cut?! I feared this day would one day come, but I never truly believed it until this very moment. God, it’s all setting in. But where will the students of Edinburgh get the latest nonsensical opinions of three pretentious film fanatics? Alas, you will have to wait for Audrey and Livvie’s successors in September, joining Nikola. Maybe one day Disney will announce the live action sequel, like Editors’ Cut 2: The Great Return and we will be so back. However, for now, here’s to the end of Editors’ Cuts – thank you for a fantastic year!
Audrey’s Goodbye
You met me at a very strange time in my life.
Truly, I can’t imagine my life without Film & TV. In fact, I’m not quite sure how I even got through first-year without being editor. We’ve had a great run — me and Livvie cranking out our pages delirious at 2am in Glasgow. Meeting (lovely) like-minded fans of cinema slowly morph into welcoming additions to each week. Asking “What did you think of _” and seeing those same faces light or burn up over pure hatred or shared passion. The opportunity to front film stories that truly matter, such as No Other Land’s win at the Oscars (which is of utmost significance especially recently), or even “silly” pitches that I’ve had a giggle of announcing at editors’ meetings: Adam Sandler is the Modern Shakespeare. I’ve truly enjoyed the hell out of my time at Film & TV. From being accused of having a foot fetish with “Toe-rantino” (I don’t, I promise!) or ranting about your faves (Rory Gilmore is Insufferable), I can’t wait to continue terrorising the section under the next set of capable film-buffed hands, as a writer. I assure you this won’t be the last you’ll see of me here.
Signing off,
Audrey.
Nikola’s Goodbye
I’m not leaving (read in DiCaprio voice). No exciting new adventure: whether that be moving to a different country, or taking up the big job. Next year, I’ll be where I was this year, still in my comfortable corner of Quaker Studio, holding up that laminated green Film & TV placard.
Even so, the nice thing about standing still is the view you have of all the people around you. In September, the Film & TV section started from scratch. Three new faces joined the editorial team with the burden of having to very quickly learn the ropes. Sitting in Potterrow on a barstool that barely held my weight, smudging curly fry fat over my keyboard, I didn’t quite understand how randomly walking into a writer’s meeting last year snowballed into somehow (and to this day I’d still stress the somehow) becoming an editor at the paper.
This wasn’t a question I had to ask for my co-editors. I had a view of two hugely driven and dedicated people finding a place for their talent to prosper. Co-editors who had such a knack for finding writers’ pulses, conjuring pitches they truly want to write; and an organised vigour, running our section like a well-oiled machine.
Audrey and Livvie, I promise I’ll take care of FILM & TV for you.
Auf Wiedersehen,
Nikola.
Livvie’s Goodbye
Denial, denial, denial. I refuse to believe this is the end of my film and television editorship. As I once wrote on my application many moons ago, I believed that I consumed media, and, conversly, media consumed me – a symbiotic relationship, devastating one another to the bitter end. But this over-consumption used to be such a solitary acitivity. Being part of The Student has connected me with a brilliant community and given me the privilege of countless opportunities, that I am immensely grateful for.
To Nikola, thank you for truly showing me how the cookie crumbles and how the dominoes fall.
To Audrey, thank you for being my partner in crime, my film festival expert, and my favourite cinema date.
I will miss everyone involved with the paper immensely. Bring on presidency, Germany, and an eventual return!
Yours always,
Livvie.
To be continued…
