It feels like everyone is trying to make one, and we are all definitely listening to them. Podcasts are the new go-to for train journeys, walking to lectures, or simply for passing time. I am a serial podcast listener, and so choosing a standout is difficult. Like many, I love the witty, food-based banter of the Off Menu boys, James Acaster and Ed Gamble, as well as the warmth of the gossip and guidance in The Girls’ Bathroom with Sophia and Cinzia. However, I am probably the most loyal listener of Newscast.
Newscast, hosted by Laura Kuenssberg, Adam Fleming, and Chris Mason, is a BBC-run daily podcast where renowned journalists discuss the latest breaking news, politics, and headlines from the UK and across the world.
In today’s state, staying informed about the latest major news feels crucial but can also be overwhelming. The breadth and consistency of the News is challenging to keep track of, and so Newscast’s half-hour episodes provide an informative breakdown of the top stories, where they also bring in experts to explain complex policies and unfamiliar international laws.
The podcast is intellectual but not littered with convoluted jargon; it sticks to the facts, providing updates on what’s what and who’s who. Unlike radio, you have the opportunity to listen at your leisure. So if you have a hectic few days or exams ahead, then you can catch up at a later date.
Newscast has also begun a subsection called ‘Old Newscast’, where the team looks back on headlines from recent history, such as Margaret Thatcher’s resignation and Vladimir Putin’s election, and how these events continue to influence the current day. Covering culture and entertainment as well, the hosts recently appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe, where they interviewed Brian Cox for his show, Make it Happen, and discussed the latest trends in theatre and stage shows.
If you want to start exploring daily headlines or find a more palatable news and culture source, Newscast is available on BBC Sounds, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Happy listening!
