Footage has emerged showing a group of people in Edinburgh trying to steal a bike in broad daylight.
It shows several masked young people, who were using bikes from the electric bike scheme recently introduced to central Edinburgh, using a chainsaw in an attempt to break through the lock.
A customer captured their actions at a nearby restaurant, which they then posted on social media.
The University of Edinburgh’s last quarterly report said that there had been 25 reported incidents at the university from August to October 2024.
Second year student Niamh told The Student: “It makes me paranoid about using my bike in Edinburgh”
“There are such limited secure bike parking places in the city, especially [in] residential areas”.
The university makes efforts to provide lockable bike sheds that students have access to.
