One of the most frustrating things that can happen to a book lover is getting stuck in a reading blockage and not being able to just sit on the couch while enjoying a piece of literature because suddenly the texture of the carpet or the fly buzzing around you seem like much more interesting things to dwell on. Luckily for you, you need not worry about this because, as a Literature student who has no choice but to read a lot, I have made a list of books to catch your full attention without having to make much of an attention exercise.
To begin with, Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid is your absolute saviour. This story will have you on such a hook you will be wishing to get home as soon as possible just to turn to the next page. Plus, it is not too long so you will not be long to finish it, and I am sure it will motivate you to go for the next one in her saga.
Another great story that will put everything else in your life on hold is The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins. This is one of those books which is an absolute must for everyone to read. I cannot stress enough. If you enjoy the art of plot twists and thrilling stories, you will not be able to bear the intrigue of this piece.
The next one is more for the classical lovers, if you have read The Song of Achilles or Circe and have liked them in the slightest bit, which I hope you have, then I am here to recommend you to check out Hanna Lynn’s Athena’s Child. A retelling of Medusa that actually brings some poetic justice to her story. Following Lynn’s retellings of unfairly told stories, we have Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati, a bloody tragedy that will make you step on the shoes of the queen of Mycenae.
As a final, and to save the public’s favourite for the last, Daughters of Olympus is an essential for this list. I am sure you have heard about the story of Persephone and Hades, but I am also certain you probably have not read anything like this one, it has every element you could possibly need in a good novel. Between pomegranates and gardens, a messy, exasperating and tragic love triangle is found, and I need not to say anything more.
