Flight delays at Edinburgh Airport due to drone

On 9 October 2025, Police Scotland received a report of a drone in a flight exclusion zone at Edinburgh Airport.

Flights scheduled to depart shortly after 11 am were held in place until the drone operator could be located.

There was also a series of delays for inbound flights, as well as a diversion to Glasgow Airport for easyJet flight EZY3242 from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Edinburgh Airport had a record-breaking year in 2024 by receiving more than 15 million passengers, making it the first Scottish airport to do so.

Edinburgh Airport is widely popular amongst students, and it provides service to more than 150 destinations worldwide.

Another travel option across the United Kingdom and Europe that students may opt for due to airport delays is the train.

Edinburgh Waverley is one of the busiest stations in the country, servicing over 21 million passengers in 2023-24.

However, research shows that trains in the UK cost 90 per cent more than flights on cross-border routes.

Additionally, Edinburgh to London is one of the busiest short-haul flight routes, as the train almost always costs more.

This recent delay should not affect anything in the future, as a spokesperson for Police Scotland said that a man has been charged in connection to the incident and “there was no threat to the public.”

A spokesperson for the airport said,  “It is imperative that drone operators are aware of their responsibilities and are aware of the flight restriction zones and potential penalties.”
