In today’s cold, miserable, and politically questionable world, there is only one beacon of hope. Only one remaining source of joy. Only one chance left to have a good time and party. And that, my friend, is Pitbull. With a career spanning over 20 years, Pitbull’s music has been a constant source of comfort and good energy through some extremely turbulent years in the 21st century. Pitbull initially experienced high levels of success in the late noughties and early 2010s, yet, in the past few years, Pitbull has experienced an upwards trajectory back to one of the top spots in party music. Whether this be because of his good vibes, signature look, or pure chance, we should all be grateful to be alive during this era of Pitbull resurgence where embracing the fun in life is encouraged.
One factor in the renaissance of Pitbull is the resurgence of recession pop which gained popularity during the global economic crisis of 2008. The need to focus on a brighter lifestyle of frivolous drinking and having the “time of your life” was a welcome distraction for many from the burden of economic anxiety. Similar artists popular in this era include Katy Perry, Kesha and LMFAO as they produced energetic party songs. The escapism this provided boosted the popularity of this music style during the panic-inducing year of 2008, as the high-energy music allowed people to experience a moment of relief.
The fun of Pitbull extends beyond his musical talent as his signature look definitely contributes towards his fame. The iconic appearance he has adopted as a short, bald, moustached man might not be considered conventionally attractive but the confidence with which he dances with beautiful, model-esque women on stage negates this. Pitbull has come to be considered one of the most attractive men, and that is largely because of how proud he is within himself, and his own looks. This draws a parallel to the popular online discourse of the Hollywood hair theory, which states that in order to make it in the world of music, one must have a distinctive hairstyle. It is surely safe to say the iconic bald head of Pitbull meets this brief, as fans often adorn bald caps to attend his concerts and adopted the nickname: ‘the bald eagles.’
Further on this note of bald cap popularity, Pitbull has experienced such a resurgence because of the infectious fun that his concerts exude. Having recently performed at London’s O2 arena, the show received nothing but great reviews and high praise online. Fans typically dress up as Pitbull and dance the night away without a care in the world. With the current state of live music constantly being criticised because of a lack of concert etiquette, it was deeply refreshing to see only positive tales from a concert, rather than generating a hateful online discourse about a performer or their fans. This demonstrates how Pitbull is like a breath of fresh air in a world where ‘cancel culture’ and hate is so dominant, he simply does just want himself, and others, to have a good time.
Ultimately, this explains why the Pitbull renaissance has gained so much traction across the UK, as in difficult times it is important to focus on the fun in life. Also, it is truly helpful if you’re ever going through a tough time, to remember that Pitbull has been there, and done that.
