Fire alarm at Main Library disrupts finals revision

A fire alarm at the Main Library disrupted people studying for final exams.

The alarm started ringing at 11am on Friday 12 December, with students told that “this is not a drill” over the tannoy.

With only one week of the exam period remaining, the alarm was met with groans and annoyance from students.

One physics student told The Student, “it means that I’m going to have to stay extra late now to get my work done.”

Another student said “it was odd to see the reaction on the 4th floor.”

“There was not much urgency and a lot of reluctance with students in exam stress mode.”

Students waited outside the library for more than an hour before finally being allowed back in at around 12:05, to their great relief.

Library staff told The Student that the cause is under investigation but is likely due to a suspected fault somewhere in the building.
