Reading Resolutions For The Next Chapter

It is officially a new year, bringing with it the unique chance for reinvention through resolutions, which, for booklovers like me, mainly revolve around reading more books. However, the classic ‘read x amount of books’ goal perhaps is not always the most beneficial resolution, inflicting more pressure than pleasure to get through books like a chore to impress your Goodreads followers, rather than basking in the pure enjoyment of reading for the sake of reading.

So, whether you are a literary connoisseur or a first-time reader, here are some alternative reading resolution ideas to start your 2026 on the right page.

Diversify your bookshelf
Whether diversifying by author or genre, this resolution is perfect for those already well-acquainted with reading but seeking different stories and perspectives, perhaps by reading more POC authors or trying out an intimidating classic. You might just find a new favourite book you had never even thought to try!

Read more sustainably
This is one of the easiest resolutions to take on – and the best for the planet. It could involve borrowing books from the library instead of buying them (also beneficial for your bank account) or even just sourcing more books, second-hand books, online from websites like World of Books or from dedicated second-hand, independent bookshops — my personal favourite in Edinburgh is Tills.

Develop better reading habits
In our current age of technology, where the majority of students face phone addiction and the constant stream of short-form content, screen-free forms of education like reading are vital to break this. You could start small by reading before bed for even just 10 minutes, significantly reducing stress and optimising sleep, or go extreme and swap out your screen time with reading altogether — encouraging you to read more books in a far less pressurised way.

Get through your TBR list
If you’re a chronic book-buyer like myself, this resolution is a must to ensure your pennies do not go to waste and you actually read all those books you buy! There are probably hidden gems you have completely forgotten about among your shelves that you clearly bought for a reason, so why not try those before buying more? I particularly recommend asking a friend or family member to pick out your next read for something more unexpected.
