All eyes turn to Barcelona as the F1’s 2026 season countdown begins

The streets of Barcelona echo with the sounds of engines revving as Formula 1 cars hit the track running for the first time in 2026. Though the noise from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is deafening, any news about how the cars are faring is kept very hush-hush behind the padlocked doors.

After the new car regulations for 2026 were announced (involving changes to tyres, fuel, engines, and chassis) F1 constructors were left with a monumental task: having to entirely transform their cars. For some, this is good news — it gives previously struggling teams a chance to re-invent themselves and come back stronger. Others will have to take their championship-winning car and bin it.

Constructors have struggled with the preliminary tests thus far — Audi only got a couple of laps in before they ground to a halt due to technical issues. Aston Martin became the second team to announce that they will be not taking full advantage of preliminary tests, after Williams reported that they would not be present at all. Meanwhile, Red Bull have had to block out rumours of ex-boss Christian Horner’s possible return to the F1 scene with Alpine,  and forcefully pull their focus back to the car. Though test runs for both Red Bull drivers had gone smoothly on the first day, the team faced wet conditions on the second, and Isack Hadjar was involved in a crash — whether Hadjar’s RB22 will be able to continue running this week remains unclear.

However, not all is doom and gloom — after a crushing year in 2025, Ferrari took to the Spanish track on the second day of tests and came back hopeful that it might finally be their year. “This year is a big opportunity for every team to do something different and maybe gain a bigger advantage” commented Charles Leclerc, now heading into his eighth season with the Scuderia.

Lap times for the cars are unimportant right now, as mileage and base mechanics take priority. So, with only a little over a month left before the first grand prix, which teams will be ready at the start line when the red lights go out?
