Most of the time, New Year’s Resolutions are short-lived, meek attempts at self-improvement, whether grand or minute. I knew this going into 2026; my little goal of trying out a new society at Edinburgh was unlikely to last past the taster session. But Rounders Society has had me surprisingly (but gladly) hooked.
Its instantly welcoming community and fiercely friendly committee leads the charge in the weekly round of fun and games. No pressure, no elitism: just light-hearted, or incredibly heated, competition. I have found Rounders Society to be the perfect sociable, low-commitment, and instantly inclusive sport society: something which can be hard to find.
On Sundays and Wednesdays, The Meadows are home to low-stakes games of rounders where everyone gets a chance to bowl, bat, field, or simply spectate and gossip on the side-lines — an excellent position I have often found myself. The game brings out true teamwork efforts and community spirit, with the classic tunes always playing in the background. Come rain or shine (though January so far has been dominated by the former), you can count on the Rounders games to begin; whether it’s a quick break from the library, some light midweek exercise to break up long days of lectures, or simply a relaxed Sunday pastime and catch-up with friends.
What’s more, Rounders Society takes the fun off the field (to the pubs). Highlights of socials so far have included many a pub crawl and quiz, picnics and BBQs, and frequent epic collabs with Conscious Edinburgh. And then there’s the tantalising promise of rounders on Portobello beach in sunny, summery Edinburgh soon to come.
This is why I present Rounders as the Society of the week — a society for low-key fun and games, just a little chaos, lots of laughs, and all-round good vibes.
