On Monday 9 February, approximately 19:30, a single-decker bus caught fire on South Clerk Street, just outside University of Edinburgh student accommodation.
Firefighters arrived and taped off the road and one side of the pavement from pedestrians and vehicles while they put the fire out.
The rear end of the bus, a number 2 heading towards Hermiston, was completely destroyed and the body of the vehicle was surrounded by smoke.
At the scene, one witness, a second-year student, told The Student: “I was just heading to the shops when I saw the commotion.”
“There must have been around 50 people all filming on their phones.”
She also expressed annoyance at the surrounding shops being closed, with Co-op displaying a sign which read: “we are closed temporarily due to bus on fire across road.”
Another witness reported hearing a loud bang.
Ambulances, fire engines, and police cars all arrived on the scene.
It is currently unknown what the source of the fire was.
