Podcast of the Week: If I Speak

I will never pass up an opportunity to talk about my favourite podcast: If I speak. Brought to every lucky listener’s ears by Novara Media on Tuesdays, the conversations between Ash Sakar and Moya Lothian-McLean never fail to bring me comfort, new perspectives and a profound feeling that, deep down, we all have a lot in common.

Each week they unpack ‘big theories’ and questions, drawing on culture, politics, relationships, social issues, personal issues—the list goes on. They question topics like why everything feels so disposable these days; or the difference between tactics and standards. They have incredible episodes on responsibility and resentment, and I love how they repeatedly return to the idea that as human beings we owe each other something. A refreshing refrain when navigating the hyper-individualism that surrounds us.

Finally, the ‘I’m in big trouble’ (Jose Mourinho shoutout) segment at the end of each episode allows listeners to write in for advice, where Moya and Ash respond honestly and thoroughly to each dilemma. This might be my favourite part of the podcast, as their advice is pragmatic and their responses have opened my eyes to new ways of evaluating problems.

I cannot recommend checking out If I Speak enough. It has absolutely changed my life.
