Is Edinburgh the most romantic city in Scotland? Finding romance this Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, is there time for the singles of Edinburgh to be struck by Cupid’s arrow? Edinburgh is home to David Nicholl’s epic love story One Day and the gothic architecture that inspired Harry Potter in which many of our beloved childhood characters found love. Yet one question lingers: is love in our gloomy capital real, or simply a work of fiction?

Encouragingly at the University of Edinburgh, 56 per cent of students find partners during their time here, earning it the title of the most romantic Scottish university. Indeed, these relationships are no casual affair with 16.94 per cent of surveyed students eventually tying the knot. So with a student population of around 49,500 students, we can remain hopeful that roughly 27,720 of us will find a partner at university. Not bad odds at all!

Still, with Valentine’s Day looming, time is of the essence. For those of you who are cuffed already, feel free to jot down these lovey-dovey spots, but for everyone else– it’s time to lock-in. Here are some bucketlist, romantic sites to secure that flaky situationship. Edinburgh is widely considered as one of the most romantic cities in the world, bursting with accessible, scenic escapes like the Water of Leith Walkway and Portobello Beach. As a UNESCO city of Literature, Edinburgh is founded upon stories, both told and untold. If you need a fantastical atmosphere to get your love story moving, consider embracing the charm of the otherworldly Dean Village reminiscent of Harry Potter’s Hogsmeade. If you’re after a gothic sunset glow, perhaps consider climbing the picturesque Calton Hill. Now, if you’re questioning if the vertical incline is worth the effort, just remember the FOMO you’ll be swamped with as you scroll through Instagram stories on February 15.

Not feeling inspired by nature or nostalgia? Balls-deep in a lazy situationship? Why not suggest a One Day themed trip around the city? You can spend the day with a visit to Old College, the iconic Vennel Steps or even Arthur’s Seat if you’re feeling adventurous. Get the ball rolling! Whatever you do, don’t let them leave before you’ve secured yourself a date for February 14. Winter is depressing as it is, and we all deserve one night of overpriced fun.

All in all, if you don’t find yourself a date, don’t fret! Have a wild Saturday night and remember the stats– next year might just be your time.
