In Memoriam: Eric Dane

Eric Dane was a beloved American actor who was cherished across generations. In April 2025 Dane was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease which causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. This disease took Dane’s life on 19 February this year, at the age of only 53.

Most well-known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan — or Dr McSteamy, to those in the know — in Grey’s Anatomy, Dane was beloved by many. He embodied the role of a ‘man slut’ with a secret tender heart, a series regular for six seasons until his character was ultimately killed off in a plane crash. Since then, fans of Grey’s have dearly missed his character, with many tuning out despite the show still continuing, and going into its 22nd season this year. This depicts how truly instrumental Dane was to the success of the show, as his wit and humour redeemed his character of the rake, making him a firm fan favourite.

In more recent years, Dane was popular for his role as Cal Jacobs, father to Jacob Elordi’s character in the hit HBO drama Euphoria. Dane is confirmed to appear in the upcoming third season — his scenes will feature him in a wheelchair due to his restricted mobility, as he was suffering with ALS at the time of shooting. Outside of the realms of television, Dane has also starred in many films such as Marley and Me, X- Men: The Last Stand, and Made of Honour, where he acted alongside his Greys Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey.

In a post made on Instagram following the announcement of Dane’s death, Dempsey stated that “the world was a better place” because of him. This perfectly encapsulates the loss of Eric Dane in both his personal life as a husband and father to two young girls, and as a wonderful actor in the world of media.
