The Short Rant: Teviot is Woke Nonsense

Now that Teviot has been open for a few weeks and the novelty has worn off, I find myself asking: is Teviot just woke nonsense?

After waiting years, I was naturally very intrigued by Teviot’s re-opening. That was, until I found out that one of my favourite study spots on campus was closing in favour of its opening. Now, if Teviot did everything Potterrow did I would’ve been less dismayed by this replacement, but I find myself thinking that this was an unnecessary ‘upgrade’ and that the two are too different for this replacement to work. Teviot has subverted my expectations from a student union; it is nicer than it needs to be, but is not as cheap. Teviot acts more as a performance, lacking the character that Potterrow had and instead feeling pretentious.

Teviot is cold in both senses of the word. The atmosphere is strange and jarring, and it seems to be strangely freezing. Alongside this temperature issue, there is a lack of charging ports. Students seeking to use the few chargers available in the more social areas of Teviot are subject to a game of hide and seek, having to climb over chairs and tables to find them, then hover or entrust their devices to strangers while charging.

While the Gallery Cafe is very aesthetic, it was clearly not designed with students in mind. With baked goods from high-end bakeries that are unfortunately unaffordable, there is a glaring lack of cheap items for students who seek food in their unions.

I could complain endlessly about how Teviot was designed with aesthetics in mind rather than the student budget or lifestyle. I should also bring up the fact that the bathrooms do not have period products. Provided for free in almost every other university building’s toilets, it feels ridiculous that this was overlooked, this almost represents how the entire building feels. Teviot seems not built for students, not designed as a reliable space, like Potterrow always was.
