Held at Whitespace Gallery, just a five minute walk from George Square campus, I had the chance to peek into Vittoria Ginevri and Marlowe Dong’s exhibition Hide + Seek for its opening on 10 March 2026.
The space, clean and minimal, very much as implied by the name, is one waiting for a story to be told. And so, the pure white walls became a mere backdrop, and standing in the middle of the room, I felt as if I was looking in a mirror.
Greens, blues, and yellows muted as if under a haze, it felt like I was caught in a fever dream. I told Vittoria I felt a sense of nostalgia, somehow, I hadn’t had the chance to think about it yet. She said this is what she hoped to express. So, I will run with my feeling.
This exhibition grappled with identity, identity from what was and what identity becomes as fond memories and certain familiarities move further away. I viewed with a tinge of sadness, seeing my own feeling of loss and my own uncertainties in the compositions in front of me.
But isn’t this exactly what our early years are about? Finding oneself amidst the confusion, within the whirlwind. In seeing blank walls filled with sentiments that resonated so deeply, even though they belonged to another, I felt a sense of comfort that I might also be seen. I would like to leave you with a caption that will stay with me, “each time i leave i take more away. maybe it would be better if i stayed.”
All proceeds were in support of Medical Aid for Palestine and Mermaids UK, bringing full circle a message on identity and affirmation of self.
