Single Review: ‘Texas Baby’ by Susannah Joffe

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Homesickness, hurt, and hope are all themes on Susannah Joffe’s newest single ‘Texas Baby’. The Texan-raised singer-songwriter’s music is a dynamic blend of synth-pop, indie rock, and country blues, and has been gaining traction since her 2024 hit ‘Die Your Daughter’.

‘Texas Baby’ is at its heart about holding onto a certain place, person, or experience that is hurting us but that we can’t help but love. That feeling of remembering and loving a place, or person, that maybe wasn’t ever really there. For Joffe, that place seems to be her home, the ‘Texas’ in question.

Nostalgic and cathartic, Joffe sings about this juxtaposition “I hate the sweltering sun, but Texas Baby, I’m yearning for you”. There is hope and optimism underneath her mixed emotions, evident in the layers of her voice and production. The song builds to a brilliant, atmospheric outro that really shows off Joffe’s range as she echoes “I’ll keep coming back to you, to you, to you, to you, to you, to you, to you, to you”.

Short and sweet, ‘Texas Baby’ is a song that encapsulates the heartbreak of homesickness. Joffe brilliantly captures that feeling of having a love-hate relationship for a complicated place that can’t quite love you back but you will keep coming back to anyway.
