Fringe 2026: Hypnotist Matt Hale: Funbelievable! 90s Rewind

Matt Hale

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I arrived to Matt Hale’s show expecting a show full of tense scenes which embarrass the subjects. However, this show couldn’t be more different from the images I had of hypnotists from the movies. In reality, his energetic entrance to a medley of 90s classics got the whole crowd dancing and quickly created the atmosphere for the Funbelievable time which he promised.

Matt Hale’s reputation as a premier Australian hypnotist is clear in the high energy of the piece, which features singing and dancing. He toured with his show 80s Spectacular in 2024 and debuted that show at Fringe 2025. This year, he returns to the Gilded Balloon Patter House by popular demand.

His popularity could be felt in the sold-out crowd as Hale commanded the stage with his humour and expert direction. I was pleasantly surprised when members of the audience almost fought one another when he asked for volunteers — everyone was eager for their chance to take part in the show. Many admitted to having seen his shows before, and regretting not putting themselves forward then. For the next hour any volunteer successfully hypnotised engaged in a series of iconic 90s singing and dancing. The shows format also created many opportunities for the audience to join in, that they gleefully took advantage of.

This turned the show from a mere spectacle into an immersive experience. Hale’s clear communication is a large pat of why this show succeeds, unlike similar shows which rely on mystery to have any effect. He created an air of comfort and reassurance, allowing everyone involved to have fun. Moreover, I came away understanding hypnotism in more depth.

Ultimately, Hale’s hypotonic skills were greatly complemented by his showmanship and the consistent presence of a theme throughout. What could have easily been a hodgepodge of mind tricks became a fun and engaging show. Altough the audience’s nostalgia added to their enjoyment, you certainly do not have to remember the 90s to go on this Funbelievable ride

Hypnotist Matt Hale: Funbelievable 90s Rewind will run until August 31 (excluding 19) at Big Yin at Gilded Balloon Patter House. Buy tickets here.
