Not your typical Fringe show, Buddha vs Jesus is a unique spin on the philosophical and cultural differences between Buddhism and Christianity. Set in a bar, and following as these two religious figures debate what their religions believe and why, the performance is dry, clever and follows mildly profound philosophical discussion. For those expecting big laughs and zingy punchlines, this will not be your favourite show. However, for anyone after philosophical concepts and erudite humour, this could easily be a Fringe standout.
A highlight of the performance is that both characters are reincarnated personas of themselves: Jesus a self-proclaimed Mary Magdalene-esque prostitute from London, and Buddha a confused homeless woman from Easterhouse, Glasgow. Of course, these reincarnations allow for each character to question the other’s religion. Can all people achieve the Buddhist concept of nirvana (the end of mortal suffering)? Why does Christianity have such a messy origin story and how can followers trust this?
Undoubtedly, the show’s one-line references to other gods remind audiences of broader theological debates, despite them being Fringe-appropriate. Prime examples of this include Shiva’s rave happening outside when the neighbouring Fringe show got too loud, or Moses and Mohammed fighting over the gods’ Western bedroom. I would also like to commend writer and director Raul Kohli as well as Laura Begely (Buddha) and Ellis-Ann O’Hara (Jesus) for such a put-together performance. Both actors were late additions due to the previous cast pulling out last-minute — it is a huge testament to their talent that this show is as cohesive and intriguing as it is.
The themes the show deals with are undoubtedly relevant and explored in a poignant tone: from navigating failure and experiencing a lack of faith to love and sex, this performance was grounded in today’s world. It is missing some conclusion between the two gods, however perhaps that reflects the fact that there really is no conclusion to these issues.
Ultimately, Buddha vs Jesus is a fascinating show that is worth a watch for anyone with a theological interest.
