The war between the Titans and the Gods is over, the Gods have come out victorious and the Titans have been defeated. Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Athena, and Hermes sit atop Mount Olympus knowing the cosmos is there for them to do what they like with it. What they’ll do with it… they have no idea.
This It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia parody follows the Gods as they decide what they’re going to do now they’re in charge, and all the fighting and partying that comes with it. While not being a complete parody in my opinion, there were definitely similarities between the comedy TV show and this comedy: the drinking, Zeus and Poseidon’s Mac, and Zeus’ narcissism that definitely mirrored Dennis from the TV show. Athena’s character strayed quite far from any representation of Dee (from the show) —but this was clearly needed in order to bring one character through as the voice of reason.
Directed by Jake Sleet for Mind Yer Head Theatre, this play was hilariously funny. My favourite sub plots being Poseidon (played by Henry Theakston) and Tentaclina the octopus’ love story, and Hades’ (played by Joshua Sinclair) search to find himself by switching aesthetic every five minutes. I also loved how they somehow managed to incorporate parts of Scottish culture into it in a way that didn’t feel forced, and actually made it even funnier. I also have to mention their ‘Alexos’ (Greek God Alexa), that was constantly reminding the Gods the cosmos was on its way to destruction — right when they didn’t want to hear it.
I feel like the final ten minutes were unnecessary, and dragged the play out a bit. It may well have been funnier overall to end the play when the cosmos was destroyed. What happened after didn’t really add anything, and may actually have taken away from how great the rest of the show was.
However, if you’re looking for a laugh I really would recommend this play, just watch out for Zeus as he comes around with his microphone singing Greek pop songs asking you to join in.
