What does Manchester City’s guilty verdict mean for their current squad?

Signing for a club like Manchester City is a dream, and with the paycheque they offer, it seems like a whole package. The Manchester City squad is no short of star players. From the mighty Erling Haaland, Portuguese star Ruben Dias, French sensation Rayan Cherki, to Elliot Anderson they have it all.

With the club being found guilty of 114 out of 115 financial breach allegations, which the club is appealing, the club’s future is quite uncertain. The Premier League has certain measures which they adopt to penalise a club for breaches. The most common one being point deductions, in the 2023/24 season Nottingham Forest were docked four points which landed them in relegation zone. Thus, these measures challenge your position in the tournament and put European qualification at risk. The commission also has the authority to expel a club from the PL.

The management is in shambles, but what about the players? It is still unclear how the players will be affected by this situation. The major clue to this can come from the clauses in player contracts. Many agents add clauses to protect their clients from relegation or a severe points deduction which seriously impacts the position of the club in the league.

Generally, if we look at the players, they could face financial and professional uncertainty and potential disruption to their careers. The players alongside the management could face public scepticism and fan scrutiny, with questions being raised about their achievements. This not only impacts their professional life but also their well-being.

For the players, the past few years have been like a dream come true, with multiple trophies and winning a treble in the 2022-23 season. The verdict is not only crucial for the future of the club but also for the players. The players do not have full control over their futures; their future is tightly knitted with those of their clubs. The clear verdict and the punishment might not be clear yet, but the players may need to start planning their futures.
