On Monday 5 October, the Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Sir Peter Mathieson, announced his decision to step down from his role. His resignation comes two weeks into five weeks of planned strike action by staff who are represented by the University and College Union (UCU).
One student commented: “This was bound to happen. I mean, the reason for the strikes is senior management’s actions, so it is no surprise that he would resign.”
Mathieson is expected to step down in early 2028 when his tenure ends. He has vowed to remain fully committed to his role as Principal until then.
Whilst it is not yet known who will replace Mathieson, a university spokesperson has said plans will be set out to appoint a successor, utilising consultation from students and staff.
When asked if they would value contributing to the appointment process, one student commented: “The appointment of a new principal must involve student and staff voices if the university wants to avoid more strikes.”
Another told The Student: “We want a principal who will engage more with striking staff.”
Mathieson told BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast: “Everything that I’ve done, I’ve always believed, has been in the university’s best interests.”
One student, however, noted that, “Peter Mathieson has said he doesn’t know exactly what he’s paid. I think the university needs someone more in touch with university life to be principal.”
