“He sold his soul, why not his house too?”

The University College Union (UCU) estimates that since Peter Mathieson took over as Principal, the university has acquired over £1b in capital assets. Despite this, management seems to be quite content with greenlighting £92m in staff cuts, including the axing of 90 courses; the majority of which hit the languages sector. Still, it is no surprise Mathieson is ignorant to the benefit of language considering the only language he speaks is money.

Mathieson claims these drastic cuts are what comes with being in this position of responsibility, so why shouldn’t he too be expected to make a personal sacrifice for the role he claims to be so devoted to — such as his very own townhouse. The Tab reports his real estate was donated to the university in 2015, with Mathieson benefiting from a rent-free town house located in New Town. The latter is said to have five bedrooms, four reception rooms, a kitchen, and a garden, where, while his gardener cuts the hedges, Mathieson cuts salaries and degree programmes. Among the money the university forked out for Mathieson’s bills was £2457 in heating and electricity — an ironic figure considering his heart remains stone cold. Any chance the university could also donate a moral compass to their liege?

Mathieson seemed all too ready to run his mouth accusing staff of “weaponising” the student body through the use of strikes, yet appeared awfully silent when asked about the salary that he ‘earns’ during questioning in the Scottish Parliament last year. It seems the only thing the Principal is good for is running his mouth and then running away — albeit his resignation is met with a boost of serotonin across campus.

Underpaid staff and those in danger of being made redundant demand compensation and the selling of Mathieson’s £2m property would be a reasonable start. This is money which should go towards staff at the University of Edinburgh. You can’t spell Mathieson without math and frankly, the math doesn’t make sense. A solution to this? You sold your soul Mathieson, so why not your house too?
