Dom – The Play follows the political career of Dominic Cummings, former Chief Adviser to Boris Johnson. The performance follows the political circus that is Westminster from Cummings’ involvement in politics until his departure. Featuring in the play include political members globally including President Obama, Nicola Sturgeon and Angela Merkel.
The initial part of the play addresses what a lot of people many have bought the tickets for, Cummings’ infamous trip to Barnard Castle during the first Covid-19 lockdown. The use of eye tests on stage was both witty and intelligently thought-out, setting the stage for an incredible performance.
The writing transported the audience back to each individual political moment, highlighting the turmoil that the country has been through. Throughout the play, Cummings’ political performances were captured and highlighted like never before, showing his importance in both the Vote Leave campaign and the 2019 General Election. Political tactics were shown, including the infamous red bus, as well as campaigning against swing voters. The Brexit Referendum was covered in detail, showing how Cummings helped create the wording on the ballot in order to favour the Vote Leave campaign. Whilst incredibly shocking, it helped portray the political genius mastermind that he arguably is.
A key theme throughout was how idiotic Boris Johnson is. The performance highlights his reliance on his partner Carrie, and his inability to take political advice. The over-the-top role created a humorous atmosphere, quite possibly due to the unfortunate accuracy. The performance also includes Cummings turning his back on Johnson over Partygate. This was the moment that I actually felt sorry for him, showing that he had learnt his lesson over breaking the lockdown guidance. In addition, highlighted throughout is the relationship between England and other countries like Scotland and the US. This addition helped show how England is viewed on a global scale.
Personal favourite moments included when Tim Hudson entered the stage as Boris Johnson, the impersonation of Theresa May dancing on stage as well as the use of Dominic Cummings’ grey hat.
All in all, Dom – The Play is an incredibly well written political comedy, capturing the turmoil that we have faced over the last eight years. Ultimately it is one of the must-see political performances of the Fringe 2023.
