13 years ago, a journalist from The Sun went for a consultation with a hypnotherapist called Zack Polanski. She asked whether she could have her breasts enlarged through hypnotherapy. He said yes and offered a session to increase her cup size, which she says worked by four inches.
It’s an odd story, right? One too weird for the journalist to make up. Sure enough, the now-leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski, has since acknowledged his stint as a hypnotherapist but claimed he apologised for his “hypno-boob” idea in a BBC interview the day after the consultation.
Unfortunately for Zack, the BBC did some digging and could not find this interview. Instead, they found him chatting about the merits of hypnotised breast enlargements to BBC Radio Humberside on 18 June 2013 – “I believe it can happen in theory.”
Playing back the interview, I did raise an eyebrow. It’s rather unnerving to have a now-politician in our midst who once believed he could grow boobs with his mind. It turns out that a lot of people are put off by its weirdness. A recent poll found 17 per cent of voters that previously said they would consider voting for the Greens changed their mind after being told about Zack’s hypno-past life.
This leads us to a bigger question: should we hold a politician’s past against them? Despite the apologies that Zack has issued, I am not a fan of the motto ‘forgive and forget’, especially not in politics – after all, this is a man campaigning to run the country.
To wipe Zack’s hypnotic history clean would be the same as overlooking Nigel Farage’s past, which takes us back to racist remarks from his schooldays. Now obviously, claiming “Hitler was right” is far more frightening than anything ‘hypno-boobs’ based, but can we rightfully prey on one politician’s past while ignoring another’s?
All politicians need to be scrutinised; that’s an inevitable part of the job. So, if I were Zack, I would be careful about sweeping ‘Boobgate’ under the rug. Addressing it correctly, including his interview with BBC Radio Humberside in 2013, might offer more clarity and confidence for voters – two things he desperately needs to keep the Greens soaring in political popularity.
As for whether a prior hypnotist should be a candidate for running the country in the first place? I’ll admit, it’s a suspicious past profession to have as a politician. If he believed he could make boobs bigger with his mind, then what other spells could he put people under?
It’s a funny and arguably superfluous thought, but compared to the racist remarks that haunt the current frontrunner for Prime Minister – Nigel Farage – an ex-hypnotist might not be too bad, as long as he remains honest and finally gets his ‘Boobgate’ story straight.
