“Mumble” vs “money”: student thoughts on the 2024 US Presidential election

The Student spoke to US students on their thoughts on the upcoming presidential election.

On March 12, 2024, Joe Biden and Donald Trump both respectively became the presumptive nominees of their party.

When asked to describe both candidates in one word, Tom Mearns, an American student studying in Edinburgh, said “Mumble” about Biden and “Money” about Trump.

“I feel like out of 330 million people…there have to be, there are, better people out there,” Mearns said.

Greta Redleaf, an exchange student from American University in Washington, D.C. is “very upset” by the current candidates.

“I was hoping Donald Trump would not run again and I was hoping somebody would challenge Biden,” said Redleaf.

There was a 4 per cent turnout in the South Carolina primaries, a state that was key to Biden’s victory in securing the Democratic nomination in 2020 and significant for black voters.

In Minnesota, Michigan, and Hawaii, a significant amount of voters voted “uncommitted” in opposition to Biden’s support of Israel in the War in Gaza.

Redleaf, who is Jewish, found Biden’s foreign policy reprehensible but still said she would back him over Trump.

“I think Biden is the better choice, but I don’t want him to be the choice,” she said, expressing interest in someone more focused on increasing the standard of living.

President Biden has consistently low approval ratings and questions continue to circulate about his age and mental fortitude.

Former President Donald Trump is in legal trouble, both about his role in the January 6 insurrection and his financial doings.

With President Biden turning 82 this year and Trump turning 78, This will be, once again, the presidential election with the oldest candidates of both major parties.
