There aren’t many rivalries in international football that are as strong and intense as the one between Mexico and the United States. This match between players represents a convergence of cultures, histories, and passions that goes beyond simple athletics. There is a strong sense of competitiveness and patriotism present in every interaction between these two countries.
One of the most captivating stories in international football has developed from the rivalry between the United States and Mexico, which dates back to the early 20th century. The United States has gained prominence in recent decades, adding an element of excitement and unpredictability to each game, even if Mexico first dominated the head-to-head. When these two footballing heavyweights square off, the stakes are always enormous, whether the match takes place in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca or on American soil.
The United States won the Nations League for the third consecutive year over the weekend, defeating El Tri 2-0 to seal the three-peat. They have beaten Mexico in two of those three finals, and while the USA have not defeated Mexico in Mexico since 2012, they have managed to escape with significant draws. On the other hand, Mexico have failed to win against the USA since 2019.
These last five years have marked significant hierarchical changes in CONCACAF, the North and Central American Football Confederation, as the United States have caught up to, and even surpassed Mexico under manager Gregg Berhalter. This should not be surprising though, as the US have players playing all over Europe, while Mexico has players predominantly playing in Mexico, creating a skill gap that has been demonstrated in recent years.
According to reports, Chucky Lozano, one of Mexico’s best players, has said: “The United States has grown a lot. They have a lot of players in important clubs in important leagues. Unfortunately for Mexico, we don’t at this moment,”
Lozano coming out and saying what every fan has been thinking in the last five years shows a low moment for Mexican football and their lack of talent. Whether this lack of talent is because of corruption in the Mexican Federation or other things, the Stars and Stripes are the kings of CONCACAF for the first time.
