Swamplesque, the ogre-parody burlesque performance, is served to us by a fabulous ensemble of drag performers in a shockingly saucy show that is undeniably camp. In just a short hour, the show travels through a familiar tale littered with enticing stunts and raunchy displays of favourite childhood characters. Adorned with elaborate costumes, stellar wit and hidden talents, the cast offer hilarity and promiscuity up to the audience as they tease away their garments.
The energy throughout the show is infectious, and whether you’re an avid Shrek fan or not, there is something for everyone to enjoy. It is also refreshing to witness a confident display of a variety of body types, creating an irresistibly positive atmosphere. Confidence is the key to sexiness, and this is one provocative performance.
Unfortunately, there is not much live dialogue or vocals, however moments in which these do feature are executed exceptionally well, with some sultry singing and hilarious quips that create an individual experience for every performance.
By utilising characters well-known to younger generations, a new route of accessibility is erected to entice new audiences into a classical style of theatre, evolving the style of the burlesque. Swamplesque is a true rendition of what modern burlesque should strive to be, and it is absolutely Shrek-tacular!
Swamplesque is on ar Assembly Hall Main Hall from Aug 9-11, 13-18, 20-25
