Woman in a pink suit eating sweets and holding eggs

Fringe 2024: Aalex Mandel-Dallal: As She Lives and Breathes

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Experimental and out of order, Mandel-Dallal’s work in progress As She Lives and Breathes set consists of a fertility clinic Garage rap, the most enticing “what’s in my bag” haul, and a charming humility that brings the audience together in laughter.

She works in and around the small stage she is given with exhilaration and exaggeration. Her crowd work is simple and engaging, reeling us in and using the intimate venue to her advantage. Despite claiming herself to be a “basic bitch,” it helps the viewer see her as a friend, someone relatable, and understandable.

Mandel-Dallal plays with sounds, props, and body clocks that makes the horrors of womanhood happy-go-lucky. Breaching topics of women’s health and relationships, she stays silly and relatable to any viewer throughout; inspirational and sweet. She is a woman your mother will recognise, and you will look up to.

Aalex Mandel-Dallal: As She Lives and Breathes is on at Laughing Horse @ The Three Sisters – The Wee Room, 17-25 Aug.
