Fringe 2024: Amy Annette: Thick Skin

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I literally cannot believe Thick Skin is London-based comedian Amy Annette’s debut show. I discovered Amy Annette at her work in progress comedy night Dogpark. While I loved the amazing lineup she brought out, I was so enamoured by her hosting ability and conversational comedy that I immediately bought tickets to her next Dogpark and booked in to see Thick Skin.

Amy Annette: Thick Skin is a super-tight, hilarious hour of chatty comedy about growing up outside of the Y2K heroin-chic mould. She takes her audience on a trip down memory lane via teen magazines and What Not To Wear, which I, a 21 year-old American, had little to no nostalgic attachment to, but still found charming and funny.

Her more personal anecdotes were very strong, and I found her enduring commitment to Blue commendable. She gracefully transitions from topic to topic, and genuinely brings the entire crowd along with her with just the right amount of call-and-response.

Amy Annette is a light in the bunker. Her personality is magnetic, and even when I’d heard other riffs on her subject of choice, I didn’t care. Like, yes the bottoms of my massive baggy jeans are soaking wet from the puddles! Thank you so much for noticing!

Annette feels like a natural on stage. A skilled hostess, she has both her personality and her punchlines dialled to the perfect frequency. Even though the fringe is nearly over, keep an eye on Amy Annette.

Amy Annette: Thick Skin is on in Pleasance’s Bunker Two at 16:25 for one more day.
