Review: Tania Kovats SEAMARKS

Tania Kovats is a British artist and Professor of Drawing and Making at the University of Dundee, whose work primarily explores the natural world. Seamarks shows an array of her work in a variety of mediums on the balcony space at Dovecot studios. The literal subjects across the works vary but all relate to the sea and the tide. We see simplified seascapes in one shade of blue watercolour, a medium that allows colour to spread organically reflecting characteristics of the sea, as well as layered images depicting maps and islands and finally a large quantity of moon studies in ink and their relationship to the tide.

The piece that predominantly stands out is the woven tapestry of a seascape. It contrasts to the other pieces in the collection due to its size, medium and heavy grey tones next to the whites and blues.

All of the artworks present a sense of moving time, whether that be the ever-
changing moon phases or the erratic sea surface. This exhibition is not only a representation of natural phenomena in our world but also a reminder of the critical climate emergency, Tania quotes that “as land based creatures we forget how critically important the world’s waters are for the planet’s heath and survival.”
