Edinburgh temperatures drop below zero

Storm Bert resulted in temperatures across the UK dropping below zero last week.

Yellow weather warnings were issued, and commuters were told to avoid travelling.

In Edinburgh, temperatures reached as low as -6 and on Saturday 23 November it snowed. This time last year the average temperature was 6 degrees.

Several students have commented on their experiences with the cold. One second-year student explained they needed to learn new tactics to deal with the cold weather as the heating in their flats is “ineffective” and “practically unaffordable”.

Other students said they turned their heating on for the first time this weekend. One student in their third year said her flat decided to have the heating on for an hour in the morning after they could see their breath in the flat “for over a week”.

One fourth-year student explained how their flat wrapped up with “lots of thermals and hot water bottles” to avoid having the heating on for too long.

Other students commented on how they are starting to notice the impact winter is having on their health. An international student in their third year said: “It’s hard to cope with the cold sometimes” as explained how it makes her feel “really homesick”.

One second-year student said her flatmates are struggling with “general wellbeing and motivation” because of how dark it is outside.

Conversely, one fourth year student said they know people “who just deal with it till the pipes could freeze”.

In addition, some students commented on Edinburgh’s recent snowfall.

“I couldn’t care less about the cold if it is snowing” They added: “it almost feels like it is worth it, like you are getting something out of the cold.”

Another student commented on the snow, saying: “It was not great for my bus journey to Kings. But at least Edinburgh was pretty.”

The cold weather is forecast to warm up again after this week.
