Students react to “inconvenience” of Quartermile Sainsbury’s closure

The Quartermile Sainsbury’s on Middle Meadow Walk has been temporarily closed until 28 February.

Though they have not given reasons for the closure, other branches around the city have received new till systems and refurbishments.

The Quartermile branch closure comes after the bakery was out of use in January due to freezer faults.

Students have reacted differently to the closure, with many expressing frustrations at the loss of “the easiest place to get food from the library.”

“I just have to walk further from the library to get a meal deal. It’s an inconvenience but at least I can extend my lunch break!” a second-year told The Student.

Some students felt that this was “annoying timing, especially with midterms,” or that it was “generally a minor inconvenience, but it’s still frustrating.”

However, others were less bothered, citing going home for reading week as a reason why they might not be in the library.

Other places students said they would be getting food from during the closure included Nile Valley and Africano wraps, Picnic Basket, and Kilimanjaro Coffee, all located close to campus.

Whilst it is possible that smaller businesses and cafes will see an increase in students visiting for their lunch breaks, most agreed that they would “probably just go to the supermarkets on Nicolson Street” to get their meal deals.
