The Top NPR Tiny Desk Concerts

National Public Radio (NPR) launched its Tiny Desk Concert series in 2009. Artists perform around the desk of former NPR host Bob Boilen, creating performances with a distinctly intimate feel. NPR has hosted over 1,000 performances since 2009, showcasing an impressive range of talent. Here are six of the best performances from behind the desk.

1. Caroline Polachek (2023)
In this performance, Polachek plays stripped-back versions of four tracks from her avant-pop album Desire I Want to Turn into You: “Pretty in Possible,” “Blood and Butter,” “Sunset,” and “I Believe.” Whilst the Tiny Desk backdrop is a departure from her usual exaggerated aesthetic, the singer maintains some of her signature whimsical charm, drinking from an antique chalice in between songs. The stripped-back tracks allow Polachek to showcase her impressive vocals, making this a truly enchanting performance.

2. Tyler, the Creator (2017)
This performance is unique as the first Tiny Desk Concert to be held at night, in which Tyler was allowed to set up the room with lights that changed colour with each song. The rapper performs a three-song set list of “Boredom,” “See You Again,” and “Glitter,” encouraging audience participation and improvising throughout. He maintains his playful character, stating at one point, “I can’t sing, but I don’t f****** care ‘cause it feels good.” The result is one of the series’ most fun and laid-back performances.

3. Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso (2024)
This performance from Argentine hip-hop duo Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso is truly unique. As part of NPR’s ‘El Tiny’ takeover, the duo performs five tracks: “DUMBAI,” “EL UNICO,” “Mi Deseo,” “BABY GANGSTA,” and “LA QUE PUEDE, PUEDE.” The Tiny Desk setting forces a reimagination of the duo’s songs, exchanging their usual electronic sound for brass harmonies and soft percussion. The result is a more laid-back, jazzy set that starkly contrasts their recorded music. They bounce off each other effortlessly, taking turns rapping back and forth, making for an intensely captivating performance.

4. Lianne La Havas (2015)
Lianne La Havas delivers a beautifully vulnerable performance in her Tiny Desk concert. The simple instrumentation allows the singer to showcase her soulful vocals as she plays three songs: “What You Don’t Do,” “Unstoppable,” and “Forget.” La Havas eases comfortably into the performance from the start. Her vocals are not elaborate, but perfectly embellished, creating a strikingly powerful and intimate performance.

5. MJ Lenderman (2024)
In this performance, Lenderman plays “Catholic Priest” from his 2021 album Ghost of Your Guitar Solo alongside standout tracks from his 2024 album Manning Fireworks. The stripped-back set allows Lenderman to fully showcase his thoughtful lyricism. His awkward charm shines throughout, as he asks the audience at one point, “What do you guys do?” In the intimate Tiny Desk setting, Lenderman’s broken vocals blend perfectly with the backing instrumentation, creating a truly emotive performance.

6. Doechii (2024)
Fresh off her Grammy win, Doechii approaches her Tiny Desk performance with laid-back confidence. She performs eight songs from her album Alligator Bites Never Heal, backed by a full band, horns, and background singers. She seamlessly moves between songs, interacting effortlessly with her band. Her stage presence is unwavering, resulting in an unforgettable performance full of energy and charm.
