Barely six months after the release of their most recent album, Romance, Fontaines D.C. have returned with a new single, “It’s Amazing To Be Young,” released 21 February 2025.
As early as the track’s twinkling intro, one finds oneself confronted with a shimmery world where all that matters is the joy of the moment. The song’s release was accompanied by an acinematically complex video that builds on the band’s elaborate and cleverly crafted cinematic universe. After watching the video, I felt transported into the video’s carefree world of youthful joy and romance with each re-listen.
Many people I spoke to about this single found “Young” boring. This is understandable, as the song is relatively formulaic and at times seems an alarmingly similar reimagining of The Cure’s 1987 “Just Like Heaven.” However, I feel the song’s charm and beauty lie in its simplicity. Though perhaps not the most lyrically complex song, it does not have to be, as the instrumentals somehow say everything the words fail to.
Near the end, the track lulls, then picks back up, this false ending lending a revived welcome into the Fontaines’ fabricated universe. Simple and beautiful, this song is a perfectly timed release on the cusp of spring, hopefully paving the way for a new full-length album.
