Poland’s President, Andrej Duda, has expressed interest in joining France’s “nuclear umbrella” to protect European allies. Similarly, PM Donald Tusk suggested that Poland should develop its nuclear arsenal.
Tusk stressed that “more modern capabilities” were essential due to new geopolitical realities. Trump has now announced that European security is no longer its primary focus.
The US defence secretary Pete Hegseth states that Europe should provide the “overwhelming share” of future military aid to Kyiv.
Esme, a student at the University of Edinburgh, stated that the US withdrawal from European defence security “makes them seem less of a reliable ally.”
The EU has announced an unprecedented $840 billion plan to increase defence spending.
Poland is already visibly committed to NATO. It has the highest defence spending relative to GDP in the organisation, at 4.1 per cent, with a target of 4.7 per cent in 2025. The country also pays $50 million per year towards Starlink for Ukrainian troops’ communication technology.
Nuclear arms in the world today have become ever-more present. Esme noted that “it’s not necessarily the threat of Poland itself having nuclear weapons, but instead the indication of a more nuclear-centric world that scares me.”
