Fringe 2025: Legally Blonde

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

She’s blonde, she’s brilliant, and she’s back. Legally Blonde returns in a riot of pink, glitter, and legal jargon, as Elle Woods proves there’s more to her than perfect hair and bend-and-snap. Captivate Theatre’s cast brings the cult classic to the Fringe with bags of charm and infectious energy. This musical comedy is based on the novel and 2001 film of the same name. It tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who gets into Harvard Law to win her ex-boyfriend back, only to discover her own potential, while staying true to herself.

This is a show that’s hard not to love. With its upbeat soundtracks, hilarious one-liners, and empowering message, Legally Blonde had the whole audience buzzing with joy. The cast, made up of young Scottish talent, radiates enthusiasm and heart from start to finish. Their comedic timing was spot-on, their vocals electric, and the choreography? Standing. On. Business.

Group numbers were especially strong, with huge harmonies and choreography that filled the stage with so much energy. There’s something especially satisfying about watching a show where every cast member is clearly having a blast — and it was contagious.

It’s not all pink heels and punchlines though, this show packs a meaningful message too. Elle’s journey of self-discovery, the power of friendship, and the triumph of defying expectations all land with real heart. The characters feel multi-dimensional, thanks to strong performances from all cast members, that bring warmth and nuance to even the most over-the-top moments. The performance struck just the right balance between charmingly cliché and cheesy in all the best ways, but sincere and grounded when it mattered the most.

Captivate Theatre, a proudly Scottish musical theatre company bringing nine musicals to this year’s Fringe, has done a stellar job with this production. It’s full of life, led by a fiercely talented cast, and a total celebration of musical theatre magic.

Limited run, big energy — don’t miss it. Catch Legally Blonde at 8pm at the Magnusson Theatre, The Edinburgh Academy, until 12 August.
