We all know the “rich girl” stereotype: self-centred, has never heard the word no, and has been handed everything on a silver platter. This is the image Sophie Garrad has often been associated with. In her latest stand-up show, Poor Little Rich Girl, she’s both embracing it and fighting against it.
Looking back on her childhood with diary entries from when she was little, her show is both witty and impactful by proving you should never judge a book by its cover. Behind Sophie Garrad’s “rich girl” façade is a woman who’s worked hard to earn a well-deserved place on the high-level comedy scene.
Throughout her show, Garrad is consistently hilarious on a wide range of topics, from prison visits, to school show-and-tells, to her pet snakes, ensuring the audience were chuckling away. Though at times her extravagant “rich girl” could have easily lost the engagement of the crowd, she always made it relatable and humorous, resulting in everyone listening in. Throughout Poor Little Rich Girl, Garrad had such a fine tuned and detailed sense of humour, right down to mispronunciation of lots of words, alongside a posh tone, that really amplify the hilarity of the show.
Additionally, Garrad’s friendly and chatty vibe paved the way for casual audience participation that weaved well into the show. By asking questions throughout and holding conversations with the crowd, the show felt tailored to our audience. This added another dimension to Garrad’s show by making it feel more personal and reflecting the comedian’s gratitude for the opportunity to perform, contrasting the ungrateful “rich girl” persona in itself.
Poor Little Rich Girl was so well delivered with a fresh and dynamic format. Garrad broke up her traditional stand-up with a spotlighted section in the style of a celebrity delivering a speech on a very important cause, as if it was the opening to a charity benefit. With a mix of deeper messages and comic lines, the unusual framework makes for a very clever and skilled performance.
Poor Little Rich Girl is a show that will having you laughing from beginning to end and as a girl boss of comedy, I can assure you this will not be the last you hear from Sophie Garrad.
Poor Little Rich Girl is running until 25 August at Baby Grand at Pleasance Courtyard.
