Already an accomplished writer, host of her own A24 late-night show, and one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30, Ziwe Fumudoh is far from a newcomer. With sharp wit and fearless stage presence, she brings her signature brand of satire to the stage in Ziwe’s America, inviting audiences to laugh through our current “constitutional crisis.”
The show’s format is somewhat chaotic, with Ziwe jumping from political commentary to asking the audience “how much do you think I could get for my black little toes?” This is undoubtedly a part of its charm though. Watching her in conversation with her audience, breaking her usual dry persona to laugh along with them is refreshing. We also get to reminisce on some of her most iconic interviews. Being reminded that George Santos – the first openly gay freshman elected to the House of Representatives – had no idea who Harvey Milk, Marsha P. Johnson, or James Baldwin were is both hilarious and depressing. But that is exactly where Ziwe shines, creating a space to laugh at the absurdity of our political situation without overlooking its serious implications.
A few lucky audience members get to experience her signature deadpan delivery firsthand. They take on the role of her interviewee who, just as in her celebrity interviews, she aims to trip up. Watching her put them on the spot is hilariously excruciating; they are confronted with uncomfortable questions – like how many Black friends they have – or quizzed on influential Black figures. Shockingly few recognised Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court justice, while nearly everyone in attendance knew Real Housewives of Atlanta alumna NeNe Leakes. A sign of the times, for sure. Ziwe proves herself to be as masterful an interviewer as she comes across in her late-night show, no mean feat outside of her usual stylised format, and skilfully draws out comedy from her audience.
Armed with only a powerpoint, Ziwe shines, blending her commentary on race and politics with her unflinching delivery to create a show that is sharp and hilarious, surely a must-see this Fringe.
