Single Review: ‘Opening Night’ by Arctic Monkeys

Rating: 4 out of 5.

English rock band Arctic Monkeys have made a return to the music scene with their new single ‘Opening Night.’ The band’s previous album The Car, released in 2022, marked the last time they shared new music. ‘Opening Night’, however, is not part of a larger Arctic Monkeys album; it is instead the lead single for the new album HELP(2), a sequel to War Child’s 1995 album, Help. The independent record label and charity War Child is dedicated to raising funds and awareness through collaborative work with musical artists to aid children suffering from the brutalities of war.

The song itself is loyal to the usual Arctic Monkeys style of indie rock, with strong guitar and base behind layered vocals. The lyrics are metaphor driven and abstract in nature, leaving you questioning your genuine understanding of the song. However, the heaviness and significance of the song is not lost. The layering of vocals in the chorus and introduction of a more complex drumbeat are striking in a haunting but peaceful way. While the song does fit in with the rest of their catalogue, it takes a more subdued approach, going for an atmospheric and cinematic feeling. Overall, the song lends itself well to its cause and offers listeners a slightly different take on Arctic Monkeys’ classic style of their previous music.

The full album will be released on March 6, 2026 and features other popular artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Depeche Mode, The Last Dinner Party, and many more. Until then, for all Arctic Monkeys fans, go have a listen, and even if you aren’t a fan, have a listen anyway. It’s for a good cause.
