Brooklyn-based indie-rock quartet Geese have made their Saturday Night Live debut as of January 24, performing a pair of songs off their latest LP,Getting Killed, released last September. This follows months of cultural and critical acclaim that has met the band at a career high of streaming and sales figures.
The band, joined by their touring keyboardist Sam Revaz, opened with ‘Au Pays du Cocaine’, a fan-favourite mid-tempo ballad that also serves as the latest single from their record. The performance featured a compelling vocal performance in frontman Cameron Winter’s signature warble, supported by Max Bassin on drums, Dominic DiGesu on bass and Emily Green on guitar. Their second performance of the evening brought the album opener ‘Trinidad’ to a bombastic and exciting realisation on stage. Perhaps most impressive was the band’s overcoming of SNL’s infamously awkward acoustics. The wickedly aggressive peaks of the latter alongside the sweet and rustic presentation of the former were executed to delight and have been received positively by the band’s supporters.
The same cannot be said of online spaces populated by those unfamiliar and perhaps more attuned to popular musicians and sounds, with X and Reddit featuring myriad naysayers and skeptics of the band’s merit. In fact, the pushback — which is greater than anticipated — is greatly indicative of Geese’s continued indie status as they take their first steps towards a mainstream audience.
