This Valentine’s Day I think all types of love should be celebrated, so this watch list focuses on the gals and female friendship.
Starting with a classic –Thelma and Louise (1991). When a weekend away turns them into fugitives, these girls never stop being best friends. There are so many moments of pure love shown through their actions, and the added commentary of how terrible men can be is certainly a bonus for this season.
If you are looking for a combination of de-centring men and platonic love, The First Wives Club (1996) is the perfect watch. After their husbands leave them for younger women, this trio teams up to get revenge. However, the biggest win for them is clearly the community they find in each other. One must also note this star-studded cast with Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton.
While Pitch Perfect (2012) does contain a few romance subplots, the most intriguing relationships are the friendships within the group. Centring on an acappella group, these girls live together, and their bond strengthens through the crazy antics they find themselves in.
Lastly, if you are looking for girlhood and platonic love, Wicked (2024) tells the story of a developing friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. As they learn from each other, they become stronger people. Despite journeying towards different paths, their connection guides them through the best and worst of it all.
Happy Galentines!
