Measure Up Gentlemen! The Revival of Tailoring

The trend cycle has repeated once again. We have moved past the low hanging, ill-fitting jeans and T-shirts of the 2000s that have made a brief reappearance over the last three years. But now, make space for tailoring. Men are taking time and considering their appearance more deeply, and are finding clothes that fit right for them. Maybe this trend was influenced by the return to old-school glamour across awards season, but either way it is being fuelled by celebrities and has quickly trickled down to mainstream media.

Harry Styles graced us with a classy yet cool tailored outfit at the Brits where he performed for the first time in three years. Styles took to the stage in black, wide leg, high rise suit trousers with broken white pin stripes. These were paired with a pale lime green shirt tucked neatly into the trousers, and a grey striped tie. On the carpet he added a matching double crested oversized (yet tailored) blazer with obvious shoulder pads for added elegance. To finish off the outfit he debuted his short hair, full moustache look — very Brad Pitt— and copied by other A-listers such as Jacob Elordi and Benson Boone, strongly placing this trend amongst the male celebs.

Styles has epitomised a trend that was already making its way onto the streets. Saint Laurent put heavy emphasis on tailored menswear in their Fall ‘26 show earlier this year, particularly with wide leg suit trousers, tight, sheer vests, and blazers with large silhouettes. The colours of the looks remained neutral too, suggesting a movement towards understated chic looks, as in womenswear currently. As we know once something has hit the runway it is only a matter of time until it crops up in everyday fashion, and its movement to celebrities at awards shows. Keeping it classy rather than trying to do too much, only gives me more confidence that this is a trend sticking around for spring.

If you’re liking the sound of this trend, I have some suggestions of where you could get started. Firstly, a classic pair of wide leg suit trousers — well fitted around the waist but swish together as you walk. Basic tighter-fitting plain Ts or vests, perfect for creating a flowing silhouette when paired with your new trousers. A pair of brown or black loafers or brogues, although this trend does also work well with a cool pair of trainers. And of course, you can never go wrong with a shoulder-padded blazer. Now measure up!
