Hailing all the way from Brisbane, Australia, Circa are back with Wolf as the “circus that moves the world.” Let’s face it, Circa: Wolf needs no introduction as the iconic physical theatre act sells itself, becoming a household name that every Fringe-goer knows through word-of-mouth, like stuff of legends.
The fan favourite circus show is an amalgamation of everything mesmerising, artistic, and fully jaw-dropping sensations. With a cast of ten Circa artists, and directed by Yaron Lifschitz, the performance shows an abstract narrative of the wolf as a “symbol of our untameable selves” as the cast conducted a display of beautifully raw visual imagery.
The utmost trust in the crew is exemplified as they propel each other weightlessly across stage, construct human towers, and literally suspend gravity with their trapeze segments.
Audience becomes prey as we become further engrossed after each stunt becoming even more outstanding than the previous, and while you couldn’t see the audience’s shocked faces due to the dimness of the room, you could certainly tell through the empathising hissing sounds made as soon as the cast lunge into perilous action. They made the feats seem effortless as they fell using pinpoint landing (almost teaching us a lesson on a hundred ways on how to fall on
purpose), and their unimaginable strength when holding each other up with virtually nonexistent shakes – every move perfectly choreographed.
I need to mention the flawlessness in their physical harmony reciprocated amongst the team, and also to the beats of the music set by DJ Ori Lichtik. Their rhythmic movements moved synchronically to each melodic variation like oscillations of waters, and not only was my jaw agape from the striking acrobatics, but also my heart pulsed along with the vibrations of the bass heard overheard. It elevated the already-established sense of drama, with the only other sound heard in the show consisting solely of the performers’ powerful grunts – as they hauntingly fully conform into their predatory role as wolves.
Circa: Wolf is running until 29 August at The Lafayette at Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows.
