After a tragic retirement due to a power unit failure during the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, it seems that winning the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship has slipped through George Russell’s fingers. From race-ending reliability issues, team blunders, adverse circumstances, alongside a teammate on the precipice of winning the title, the Briton’s luck appears to be especially rotten.
Touted as the Championship favourite from as far back as pre-season testing in Bahrain, Russell’s season began to slowly unravel after claiming his win during the season opener in Australia, with a subsequent sprint race victory in China. During the Japanese Grand Prix, an untimely safety car after a pit stop saw Russell drop from the lead to P4, whilst teammate Kimi Antonelli benefited from it, and won the race. Despite a glimmer of hope in the form of a sprint race victory, his misfortune carried to Montreal, with him forced to retire from the lead on lap 30 due to a power unit failure. This secured his teammate’s victory.
Russell was also swept up in the Monaco Grand Prix chaos, when, after being handed a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane, intra-team miscommunication caused him to incorrectly serve it and was thus subjected to a race-ending ten-second time penalty. Antonelli would twist the knife further with a comfortable victory in the principality.
Reprieve came in Austria, with Russell converting pole to a win and his teammate finishing third. This however, was brief, as contact with Sir Lewis Hamilton at Spa saw him spinning out on to the gravel and facing yet another premature end to a race weekend. Antonelli only further extended his lead in the championship.
Baku saw fortunes change as Russell claimed a marginal victory following a close battle with Verstappen, though the following race saw a devastating blow to his championship campaign. Speaking to F1TV following his DNF at Sepang, the Briton was despondent as he reflected on the hardships that have plagued his season: “It’s unfortunately happened too many times this season, and, yeah, this is just where we are.”
With the season’s end in sight, it appears all but certain that George Russell’s championship dreams have been shattered. Could the Mercedes man receive good fortune and bounce back in the future? Or has he exhausted his only chance to reign victorious at the pinnacle of motorsport?
