As a lengthy international break ends, it is important to acknowledge the strong performances seen by Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland side in the Nations League B. Northern Ireland currently sit top of Group 2 following away wins against Georgia and Ukraine and two draws in Belfast against Hungary and Georgia, not having conceded a single goal in the competition.
This is also a reduced Northern Ireland side with Liverpool’s Connor Bradley injured and Sunderland’s Dan Ballard picking up an injury away against Georgia, leaving O’Neill without two of his few established Premier League players. This is also an incredibly young Northern Ireland team, with five players aged 21 or younger starting in Northern Ireland’s emphatic 3-0 win against Ukraine and Ciaron Brown being the only player above 25 to start multiple games for O’Neill’s side over the break. This leads to one key question: is Northern Ireland about to experience a golden generation, and how far can this group of young players take Northern Ireland?
Of note are brothers Shea and Pierce Charles. At 22 years of age, Shea Charles has been a bright spot in a shaky Fulham side, and 21-year-old Pierce Charles has played a vital role in net during Northern Ireland’s Nations League campaign, providing an assist against Ukraine and saving a penalty from Kvaratskhelia against Georgia. This team also includes 24-year-old utility man Trai Hume, 21-year-old Ruairi McConville, and 23-year-old Isaac Price, who has scored 11 goals in 35 games for Northern Ireland, playing as an attacking midfielder or winger.
In short, this is a young, exciting Northern Ireland side capable of producing strong defensive displays and brutal attacks that even the best teams have fallen victim to, including scoring a goal against France in Didier Deschamps’ last home game as manager. While Northern Ireland will not host any games during the 2028 Euros that is set to be played in the UK and Republic of Ireland, if they qualify, they may surprise many in a tournament so close to home.
