If you’ve ever wondered what a Shrek-themed burlesque acid trip might look like, Swamplesque is your answer. Trust me, it’s just as gloriously unhinged as it sounds.
This fabulously filthy Fringe offering is a parody show like no other: a delightfully camp, audaciously raunchy mash-up of drag, burlesque, pop culture, and pure chaotic joy. Part striptease, part singalong, part fever dream — Swamplesque doesn’t take itself seriously for even a second, and that’s exactly the point.
Set in the world of everyone’s favourite ogre, the show introduces us to a star-studded cast of familiar faces. There’s Fiona, Donkey, the Gingerbread Man, Dragon, and even Lord Farquaad, reimagined here as a dominatrix-style diva who commands the stage with unrelenting charisma. Each number was met with cheers, cackles, and occasional gasps, as the performers confidently strutted, stripped, danced and swung through a high-energy hour of bottomless absurdity.
Expect pop hits to sing along to, and nudity — lots of it. This show is not for the prudish or faint of heart. You will see bums and tits with tassels in full swing. But Swamplesque isn’t shocking for the sake of it. The queer, body-positive cast radiates joy and confidence, and the inclusivity and celebration of all bodies on stage feels genuinely empowering.
Don’t go digging for deeper meaning because Swamplesque isn’t here to teach, it’s here to tease. If you’re after existential depth or political subtext, you’ve taken a very wrong turn at the swamp. But if you’re in the mood for something bold, bizarre, and entirely unserious, then this show might become one of your Fringe highlights. Just don’t bring your gran — unless she’s very, very cool.
Catch Swamplesque nightly from 1–25 August at 9:30pm at Assembly Main Hall. Ages 16+ only.
